- Flowering and non-flowering plants have a rosette of leaves (Exception – Robust snail orchid).
- Labellum is not visible (Exception – Shy greenhood).
- Narrow, thickened or clubbed lateral sepals.
- Flowers are generally much smaller than the similar Shell orchids.
